A relative newcomer to the Westside Wine Trail, the hatch is a novel little tasting room that boasts no on-site vines. To be honest, this West Kelowna winery doesn't own any of their own vineyards choosing to rely on the careful sourcing of grapes from smaller growers in the valley.
This concept really appeals to our cooperative values, a winery focused on elevating and romancing the product of small-crop growers to a larger market, which is really what the Vagabonds are all about.
Elevating Valley wines through a group of contributers working together to produce great content, tasting exoeriences, wine and art - this consortium is one to keep your eyes on. Their eclectic collection of unique boutique wines represent the misfits, derelicts and small crop purists growing great grapes throughout the valley.
The hatch offers a great view of neighbouring vineyards and Okanagan Lake with a diverse line-up of wines created from Gewurztraminer, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Zweigelt, Riesling, and Pinot grapes proudly displayed in their rustic tasting-room.
We left with a few bottles Crown and Thieves, check out the cork, as well as a bottle of "Lifecycle of a Hobo", imagine that.
We could go on about this quirky gem but will let them tell you about how they adquired the artwork displayed on their labels.
Valley Vagabonds Inside TipWe were told...just before launching the winery the crew discovered their chosen name was already spoken for which provoked a bit of chaos and a lot of frenzy as everyone scrambled to come up with an alternate title for this West Kelowna gem. After a night of fretful deliberation "the hatch" was chosen - why, is still a discussion item. There is a whimsically nonsensical explanation on their website however an inside source said it was an idea just hatched - which is totally acceptable coming from this colourful crew that spends their days intoxicated by breathtaking views, ecclectic art and yes, copious amounts of wine.
