Summer Gate Winery

We first experienced Summer Gate Winery’s white wines during an intimate tour of small batch wineries in Summerland. At first glance, there’s nothing unusual about this quaint vineyard but on closer inspection there’s an abundance of uniqueness in both the wines and the vineyard practices.

A visit to the winery is akin to stepping back in time to a place where farming was done with the health of the land taking priority over the size of the yield. Their farming practices utilize natural techniques that include the absence of chemical interventions that include pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers. Instead, they rely on reduced crop yields, special canopies and working alongside Mother Nature to produce their bounty.

Their grapes are hand harvested, pressed and fermented in stainless steel tanks to produce fresh fruit forward whites.

Valley Vagabonds Inside Tip

Check out the vineyard chickens which help to keep insects at bay and provide naturally organic fertilizer for the vineyard.
